Tool Information

Descript is an audio and video editor built around a transcript. Delete words in the text and the corresponding media changes; edit captions, arrange scenes, clean sound, remove filler words, record remote guests, and create short clips in the same project. Underlord, its AI co-editor, can perform editing and generation tasks from a prompt. Paid plans add more media time, AI credits, resolution, stock media, translation, and team controls.

Free includes one media hour and 100 one-time AI credits. Hobbyist costs $24 monthly or $16 per month annually. Creator costs $35 monthly or $24 annually, while Business costs $65 monthly or $50 annually. Descript is excellent for spoken-word workflows, but transcript edits can create unnatural cuts. Review audio at every edit, save versions, obtain consent for voice cloning, and monitor separate media-minute and AI-credit pools.

Descript review

Descript changes the first question in an edit. Instead of asking which timeline tool removes a bad sentence, you delete the sentence from the transcript. The audio or video follows the text.

That approach makes podcasts, interviews, tutorials, and talking-head video approachable for people who think in words. It also creates a new responsibility: every clean transcript edit must still sound and look natural when played.

Transcript editing is the reason to choose it

Import or record media, let Descript transcribe it, then edit the text as if it were a document. Speaker labels, multitrack transcription, captions, scenes, and timeline controls are available when the project needs more precision.

Listen across every cut. Removing a filler word can clip a breath or create a visual jump. A sentence that reads well may sound rushed after three pauses disappear. Keep room for human cadence.

Descript supports 25 transcription languages on current plans. Accuracy depends on recording quality, accent, overlap, and specialist vocabulary. Correct names and technical terms before using the transcript for captions or show notes.

Underlord is useful when the task has several boring steps

Underlord is Descript’s AI co-editor. It can remove retakes, improve sound, create clips, add captions, generate supporting media, draft descriptions, and perform broader edits from a prompt.

The official usage guide explains that Underlord uses credits for the agent’s reasoning and again for tools it runs. The same request can cost different amounts depending on the media and work performed.

Ask for a reviewable pass, not an irreversible final. Save a version before a broad clarity edit. Compare the original and result, especially when the speaker’s hesitation or repetition carries meaning.

Audio repair can save a recording, within limits

Studio Sound reduces noise and improves speech. Remove Filler Words, Shorten Word Gaps, and Remove Retakes handle common cleanup. AI Speech can regenerate a word or phrase to repair an awkward cut.

These tools are excellent for a remote interview with modest background noise. They can make heavily damaged audio sound processed or alter the speaker’s character. Apply the lightest setting that solves the problem and compare on headphones.

Custom voice clones require consent. Do not create replacement speech that changes what a guest intended. Keep an editorial record when generated audio repairs a factual word or sentence.

Pricing has two separate usage pools

The current Descript pricing page lists Free at $0 with one media hour per month and 100 one-time AI credits. Hobbyist costs $24 monthly or $16 per person per month annually, with ten media hours and 400 monthly AI credits.

Creator costs $35 monthly or $24 annually, with 30 media hours, 800 credits, 4K export, advanced Underlord tools, generated video, and stock media. Business costs $65 monthly or $50 annually, with 40 media hours, 1,500 credits, brand tools, team features, and proofread dubbing.

Unused monthly media minutes and AI credits do not roll over. Creator and Business can buy top-ups that last for 12 months. Track both pools because a project can have recording time left and still run out of AI editing.

A useful Descript test

  1. Record or import a ten-minute conversation with two speakers.
  2. Correct the transcript and remove one weak section manually.
  3. Apply Studio Sound lightly and compare before and after.
  4. Ask Underlord for three clips, then review every cut and caption.
  5. Check media-minute and AI-credit use after the finished export.

This shows whether Descript’s editing model matches the content you actually make.

My verdict

Descript remains one of the easiest serious editors for spoken-word content. Transcript editing, Rooms, Studio Sound, captions, and Underlord cover the path from recording to finished clips without forcing every creator to become a timeline specialist.

Free is enough for a short test. Hobbyist fits regular solo work, while Creator is the practical tier for 4K, more media, and deeper AI editing. Save versions, listen across cuts, and treat generated speech as an editorial change that deserves consent and review.

F.A.Q (5)

Yes. Free includes one media hour per month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p watermark-free export, transcription, and limited access to Underlord and AI tools.

Hobbyist is $24 monthly or $16 per person per month annually. Creator is $35 monthly or $24 annually. Business is $65 monthly or $50 annually. Enterprise pricing is custom.

Underlord is Descript’s agentic co-editor. It can apply edits, generate media, create clips, improve sound, and help write or publish material from a prompt. Chat and tool actions use AI credits.

Media minutes measure uploaded and recorded audio or video. AI credits pay for features such as Underlord, Studio Sound, filler-word removal, AI speech, avatars, and generated media. Both are shared at the Drive level.

Paid plans support custom AI voice clones and regenerated speech. Create and use a clone only with clear permission, listen for pronunciation or tone errors, and disclose synthetic speech when context could mislead listeners.
