ChatGPT is the AI tool I would use as a baseline. Not because it wins every specialized job, but because it can handle enough different work to reveal what you actually need. Give it a report to research, a spreadsheet to inspect, an awkward email to rewrite, and a small coding problem. The weak point in that sequence tells you whether to keep ChatGPT or buy something narrower.

The mistake is treating one fluent answer as finished work. ChatGPT is most useful when the conversation has evidence, constraints, and a definition of done. Without those, speed turns into polished uncertainty.

It is now a workspace, not one chat box

Ordinary chat is still the front door, but the product now includes several distinct workflows. Search answers current questions with web links. Deep Research makes a plan, examines selected sources, and produces a longer report. Projects keep chats, files, and instructions together. ChatGPT Work handles longer tasks and can return editable documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Codex focuses on software work.

That range is valuable, but it makes the interface less obvious. A quick summary does not need Deep Research. A consequential market report probably does. A repository change belongs in Codex rather than a general chat with three pasted files. Choose the workflow before choosing the model.

Projects are especially useful for recurring work. Put the source files, house rules, and previous decisions in one project, then start separate conversations for distinct tasks. That produces cleaner context than one endless chat that mixes strategy, copy, customer support, and code.

Research is better when you control the sources

Deep Research is the feature I would test first for professional knowledge work. OpenAI says users can choose websites, uploaded files, and connected sources, review the proposed research plan, and download the finished report. Ask it to separate confirmed facts from inference and to show the source behind every number that affects a decision.

Then open the links. A citation may point to a relevant page while the sentence overstates what that page says. For legal, medical, financial, or publishable claims, the original source remains the authority.

For quick current questions, Search is faster. For work based mainly on your own files, upload the material and tell ChatGPT which files are authoritative. The tool performs better when it is not forced to guess which version of a document matters.

Pricing makes sense only against a real limit

The official ChatGPT pricing page starts with Free. Plus is $20 per month and expands model access and limits for tools such as Deep Research, images, Work, and Codex. Pro has $100 and $200 monthly tiers with substantially more usage. Business and Enterprise add workspace administration and different data protections.

I would not upgrade because a comparison table says “advanced.” Use Free until a limit interrupts a repeatable task that matters. If research, coding, or image generation saves several hours but regularly stops mid-session, Plus has a clear job. Pro is for people who can name the high-volume work that earns back the price.

Limits can apply differently across models and features. A paid subscription is not a promise of unlimited access to every tool, so check the live plan page before buying for one specific capability.

Data Controls deserve five minutes

OpenAI’s Data Controls guide explains how personal users can turn off model-improvement use. Temporary Chats are not used for training, do not appear in history, and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety.

Those settings are helpful, but they do not make every upload appropriate. Remove unnecessary personal data, keep credentials out of prompts, and follow the policy attached to a work account. When a connector can reach email or cloud files, grant the smallest useful scope.

A fair 30-minute ChatGPT test

1. Upload a document you know well and ask for three claims with page-level evidence.
2. Research one current question and open every cited primary source.
3. Turn the result into an editable deliverable with a specific audience and format.
4. Ask ChatGPT to identify what it could not verify.
5. Measure corrections and time saved, not how impressive the first answer felt.

This test exposes the whole product: file understanding, research, writing, source discipline, and the quality of the handoff.

My verdict

ChatGPT remains the strongest general starting point for someone who wants one AI subscription rather than five narrow tools. Its range is real, and Projects, Deep Research, Work, and Codex give that range useful structure.

It is not a truth machine or an autonomous employee. Keep the task bounded, inspect the evidence, and review anything that leaves the chat. Start free; pay when a measured workflow, not curiosity, runs into the limit.
