Claude

Claude is the assistant I would test when the material is messy and the answer needs judgment. Give it a long policy, contradictory meeting notes, or a draft that sounds stiff, and it often finds the structure without flattening the language. That is more valuable than producing another fast paragraph.

Its product surface has grown quickly. Claude now spans ordinary chat, Research, Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, connectors, and file creation. The useful question is no longer “Can Claude answer this?” It is “Which Claude workflow should own this task?”

Reading and writing remain the center

Claude is good at turning dense material into a clear brief, comparing documents, challenging an argument, and revising prose without replacing every sentence with generic corporate language. The best prompts give it an audience, a decision, and source boundaries. “Find the clauses that change our obligation and explain the practical consequence” is better than “summarize this contract.”

Ask it to quote or cite the relevant location, then check the original. Claude can miss a qualification or combine two sections too confidently. Its calm tone should not be mistaken for certainty.

For writing, show Claude a genuine sample and name what must survive: pace, vocabulary, opinion, and sentence length. A style request without examples usually produces a polished average.

Research is useful because it shows its work

Anthropic’s Research guide explains that paid users can let Claude search the web and connected sources, work through a question in several steps, and return citations. You can include Google Workspace and other supported connections when they are available.

I would use it for orientation: map the market, identify disagreements, collect primary documents, and expose gaps. Then I would read the important sources myself. A research report is the beginning of judgment, not outsourced judgment.

Connectors make this more practical for internal work, but permissions matter. Connect only the source needed for the task, confirm which account is active, and test whether an ordinary user can retrieve material they should not see.

Claude Code changes who should consider Pro

Claude Code works inside a repository and terminal, where it can inspect files, edit code, run commands, and react to tests. That makes Claude Pro more than a writing upgrade for developers. It supports a full investigate-edit-verify loop instead of a code snippet pasted into chat.

Cowork applies a similar idea to broader computer work, while Design and Science target more specialized creation and research. These features are promising, but do not grant them broad access on day one. Start with a reversible task, inspect the proposed action, and preserve a normal human review path.

Free is credible; paid is about workflow

On the official Claude pricing page, Free costs $0 and includes the core apps, web search, memory, code and file creation, and connectors. Pro is $20 per month or $200 per year. It adds more usage, Research, Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, and wider model access. Max costs $100 or $200 per month for much higher limits. Team plans begin at $20 per seat per month on annual billing for the standard seat.

Do not choose Max because the number is larger. Run one demanding week on Pro and note when the limit interrupts paid work. The higher tier makes sense only when that interruption costs more than the upgrade.

Privacy settings are part of setup

Anthropic’s model-training privacy guide explains the choice available to consumer users for new chats and coding sessions. Commercial services have separate commitments.

That distinction matters. A personal Pro account and a company-managed Claude plan are not interchangeable data environments. Remove unnecessary sensitive details, review connector scopes, and follow the terms attached to the actual account.

A useful Claude trial

1. Upload two documents that disagree and ask Claude to map the conflict with citations.
2. Turn the result into a short decision memo for a named reader.
3. Run one Research task and open every primary source behind the conclusion.
4. If you code, give Claude Code a tested bug on a branch.
5. Record corrections, time saved, and where the limit appeared.

The point is to test judgment across a real workflow, not collect clever answers.

My verdict

Claude deserves a place on the shortlist for serious reading, writing, and repository work. Its advantage is the quality of the collaboration: it often helps clarify the problem before racing to the output.

Free is enough to learn the voice. Pro becomes compelling when Research, Claude Code, or recurring document work has a measurable role. Keep the evidence visible and the permissions narrow, and Claude can be an unusually useful thinking partner.
