Tool Information

Open WebUI is a browser-based interface for talking to models served by Ollama or compatible hosted APIs. It adds more than a chat window: document knowledge, web search, user controls, model switching, and extensions can be configured in one installation. Its documentation also describes tools and agent execution, which makes deployment permissions important. Self-hosting does not automatically make every conversation private; a connected external model provider still receives the requests sent to it. Test access controls, backups, data retention, and the precise model route before using it with a team or sensitive files.

It is strongest when one team needs a common front end across several model providers. The tradeoff is operational ownership: someone must update the service, secure integrations, and decide which models and tools each user can access.
