You can explore a concept, use references, repair the image, upscale it, animate it, or train a narrower model without leaving the platform. That breadth suits creators who do not want a separate subscription for every visual step.

The tradeoff is a crowded toolbox and a token system where one number does not equal one image. A cinematic video, an upscale, and a quick draft have different costs. The plan that looks generous can disappear quickly if the workflow relies on expensive third-party models.

Choose the workflow before the model

Leonardo offers its own models and selected external models. Begin with the output: product mockup, game environment, social graphic, storyboard, portrait, or motion clip. Then choose the model and references that fit the job. Randomly cycling through every model makes it hard to learn why one result improved.

Presets and Elements provide reusable visual direction. Image guidance helps preserve composition, style, or a subject. Realtime Canvas is useful for sketching and iterating more directly than a text-only prompt. Keep a record of the model, prompt, reference strength, dimensions, and seed for any asset you may need to reproduce.

Custom model training can help with a repeated character or visual domain, but it needs clean, licensed examples. A mixed dataset teaches the model mixed decisions.

Editing is where the platform becomes practical

A good generation often contains one bad object, an awkward edge, or empty space in the wrong place. Leonardo’s editor, canvas, background removal, and upscaling tools let you fix or extend the useful image instead of throwing it away.

Premium and Ultimate add relaxed generation on selected first-party image models, while Ultimate extends relaxed access to selected video models.

Token cost varies with the model, number of references, quality, image size, and operation. Track the cost of an approved asset, not one generation. If 100 attempts produce two campaign-ready images, those two are the economic unit.

Start free using non-confidential concepts. Essential is the first sensible paid tier when privacy or repeated daily work matters. Upgrade after the monthly token history shows a real bottleneck.

Free and paid output rights differ

Leonardo’s commercial-use guide says both free and paid users can use generated images commercially. Paid users retain full ownership and intellectual-property rights for private generations. Free creations are public; Leonardo retains broad rights and the user receives a non-exclusive, royalty-free commercial license.

If a client expects confidentiality or exclusivity, use Private Mode on a paid plan before generating. Upgrading later does not make a previously public concept secret. In every plan, clear reference images, people, brands, and protected characters yourself.

A fair campaign test

1. Write one real brief with format, audience, and required visual space.
2. Choose one primary model and one comparison model.
3. Create a small set, then repair the strongest result in the editor.
4. Upscale or animate only after the still image is approved.
5. Record total tokens, corrections, rights status, and finished assets.

Leonardo AI is a strong choice for creators who need a broad visual workshop rather than one image model. Generation, references, editing, upscaling, motion, and model training can support a real creative pipeline.

Its complexity is manageable when you standardize a small set of models and record what works. Begin free, move private client work to a paid plan, and judge value by usable assets after editing rather than the number of pictures the dashboard produced.
